hems.

I’ve been busy. We hosted Thanksgiving dinner this year. We had a great time and Keith prepared some amazing food. I had forgotten how much energy it takes to prepare the house for hosting a gathering…ironing napkins, polishing silver…things I just don’t do every week, but consider essential when setting out Thanksgiving dinner. The more time spent ironing & cleaning, the less time spent on crafty pursuits.
Lee came over for a sewing session during Thanksgiving weekend and, for the first time ever, I discovered a hemming mojo. I actually had a nice time using my sewing machine. So nice, in fact, that I proceeded to hem several handwoven towels, the vintage kitchen toweling, and the rep weave placemats that I wove three (four?) years ago. I’m pretty excited about finishing these things. The rep weave mats, though painful to weave due to the limited shed, are some of my favorite pieces ever.
This weekend I pulled all of the little pieces of handwoven out of the bin and washed them. Keith devised a nice little pattern for a placemat sewn to highlight a piece of handwoven fabric. We spent a couple of hours yesterday sewing a couple of test mats. I’m planning to do some free motion quilting on the mats. We’ll see what happens.
Lee & I are planning to get together next weekend to make the Messenger Bag from Quilting Art’s Stitch issue. We’re also considering a commitment to complete a sewing project each month in 2009. I’m looking forward to it!
Oh. Pictures of all of the above will be coming soon. I’m just waiting to have an opportunity to take photos while it’s light out (a limited window of opportunity in December, especially with my long work hours).

Hmmm….I missed that messenger bag when I flipped through it at the rack in Jo-Ann’s. I’ll have to look again and see if handwoven fabric might work.
Thanks for pointing out..
